I have made a commentary of sorts with my thoughts on the Bible

Romans 6:1 Starting from this verse, this question seems absurd. Obviously sinning more is not right, but reading chapter 5 before coming to this question gives it a bit more weight. If the answer to this question was ‘yes’, the godless hedonists would have their way. Verses 20 and 21 of chapter five are so healing to a hurting soul. The devil loves to accuse the saints, but Christians can rest assured in God’s purpose to die on earth for us because we are sinners. They are reassuring verses, but the hypocrite will pervert verses like that into a license to sin.

Romans 6:2 Paul’s answer is NO WAY! Don’t forget, sin kills you. It is not a reward for being good, and it is not a neutral, passive agent in our lives. It is a cancerous evil that will not stop until it has permeated every area of our lives.

Romans 6:3-7 Sin is a bad marriage that was abusive and dangerous. Our baptism with Christ freed us from that marriage because we are then dead to sin. Christ then takes our battered, scarred, and broken bodies and makes us spotless and pure for His own sake. Our reward is in heaven when we believe Christ’s work on the cross is enough to make us spotless. A laps in faith is saying Christ didn’t heal us, and our abusive husband has a better plan for our lives.

Romans 6:8 The hope of the Christian, rooted in faith, is that we will live with Christ. Our faith is that a killing of our old, sinful self will not be our ultimate destruction, but that we too will conquer death as Jesus did.

Romans 6:9-10 We inherit Christ’s victory over death. Jesus didn’t need to die to sin, but of course He did on our behalf. Rising anew, we have new purpose towards live.

Romans 6:11-12 Again, we are reminded that Christ’s conquering of death is our conquering of death and as He threw off the mastery of sin, we too should throw it off.

Romans 6:13-14 The last few verses have been leading up to this, that we do not have the freedom to sin whenever we want, but that we now have the freedom to act righteously whenever we want, a privilege we never had before Christ saved us. We now have the freedom to serve the Righteous Master, and thus, we should offer our bodies into his service. Don’t let sin temped you to switch sides again.

Romans 6:15-16 I am sort of glad to read this and see that I am not the only one who has though a little sin is good reward for obedience. How destructive a lie is that? Sin is the marching orders of the enemy and always results in death. Why is it so hard to remember that? It is interesting how righteousness is contrasted with death.

Romans 6:17-18 The Romans show a model of the effects of salvation. They were enslaved by sin, then they heard the Truth and turned from sin to obedience. Then they were no longer slaves to sin, but slaves to righteousness.

Romans 6:19 Paul is harping on this point. There are only two options, slave to righteousness or slave to sin. I think most of the time in American the lost are tricked into thinking they are their own masters. They set themselves out to do their own will, which is always against God’s. It is always against God’s will because it is not their own will at all, but the enemy who has deceived them into thinking they are in control. On the other hand, speaking in terms of making ourselves slaves to righteousness shows what our attitude should be when we don’t feel like obeying. A slave obeys out of duty when delight is not there.

Romans 6:20-21 This is a universal truth, you cannot serve two masters. It is either sin or righteousness. Paul asks the simplest question, but it packs a big punch. Asking a question like this should have the force to stop every temptation.

“Holy Spirit, quicken my mind to remember truth in the midst of trials and temptations.”

Romans 6:22 God has gone on a costly rescue mission to free us from the dominion of death and bring us to His kingdom. In God’s kingdom we find holiness and eternal life.

Romans 6:23 Sin equals death. God gives eternal life through His Son Jesus Christ our Lord and the one whom we obey.
