Romans 5:1-2 Being justified removes all barriers to having peace with God. The justification happens through faith in Jesus Christ. He extended grace to all who will believe. Since this is the place we are at, let us rejoice in the hope that God will be glorified through all of history.

Romans 5:3-4 In the previous verse he says we rejoice in hope, now he says we rejoice in suffering. We rejoice in suffering because it leads to hope via character. I find it interesting that hope comes after character and not before. It is easy to see the relationship between suffering and character. The relationship between character and hope is a little harder, except that with a strong character it might be easier to trust God at His promises.
Romans 5:5 This hope sounds very similar to faith. Take a look at how the hope doesn’t disappoint us because it’s a hope in not something coming in the future, but something that has already happened, but we have a hard time seeing it all the time. God has poured out His love into our hearts, but we don’t feel it all the time. But we should know, or rather, hope that it is there. Know that the Holy Spirit is with us because God has given Him to us, we don’t always know it, but hope in God’s glorious character and believe that He has given us the Comforter He promised.

Romans 5:6 Christ’s coming was timed perfectly. It was the right time to switch from faith in the prophesies of the Messiah to faith in the works of the Messiah. Mankind has always been powerless to save ourselves, and we always will be powerless.
Romans 5:7-8 The contrast cannot be strong enough. Our willingness to give our lives for good people is one thing, Christ gave His perfect life, for completely rebellious people. This is important because it also suggests that we have not worked for it nor are we required to.

Romans 5:9-10 Verse 9 is the reason and verse 10 is an example to flesh it out. God died for us when we were His enemies, this gave us the grace to divert God’s wrath from us to the Son. This powerful sacrifice saved us, however Christ’s conquering death and raising from the dead is, when you think about it, much more powerful than His death, and that’s the power in which we live.
Romans 5:11 This is a cause of rejoicing. Our former enemy has taken us as sons and daughters instead of prisoners and slaves.

Romans 5:12-13 Death, the result of sin, entered the world when Adam sinned. There was sin before the law, but it was accounted differently.
Romans 5:14 There certainly was sin between Adam and Moses, they just didn’t have the law.

Romans 5:15-17 Adam’s sin covered all men and brought physical death, however God’s gift to mankind, like the trespass, reaches all men but brings spiritual life. However, it doesn’t mean all are saved, but that the means of grace are available to all. Those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and righteousness reign in life through the power of Jesus Christ.
“God help me to reign in life through Christ.”

Romans 5:18-19 One man, Adam, sinned one time and brought death to all. No consider Jesus, acting in obedience, died on the cross and brought justification to all.
Romans 5:20 We shouldn’t be upset at the law for pointing out our sin, rather we should worship God for providing the grace to abound all the more.
Romans 5:21 Sin is contrasted with grace. Sin reigns where death is in control. Grace reigns where Christ is in control.
